She’s A Football Coach?
I have a passion for coaching football and a love for making a positive impact on others. I have been fortunate to do both for the past 10 years. Over the years, I have gone from Team Mom to Head Football Coach. While my involvement with football began with my son at the age six, my personal love for the game began on November 8th 1970, New York Giants vs Dallas Cowboys game. At age seven, I fell in love with 2 men that day, #10 Fran Tarkenton and #30 Ron Johnson.
While most little girls dream of being a dancer or a cheerleader, I wanted more than anything to be a running back. However, during that time coaches were not as open minded to females on the field, even though there were scholastic rules in place to allow it.
So my next best thing to be close to the game of football was to celebrate from the stands. After nine NY Giant QBs, my son was born during the era of Kerry Collins. From the time my son could walk, I would run in a juking pattern so he would mimic the run. I would race him off the line on the side walk, and I probably have as many passing yards as some NFL Quarterbacks form throwing spirals in to my son in the living room.
Over the years my son played Pop Warner in California, one year in Georgia, Orange County Junior All American and is now a starter in High School. I have lived vicariously through his journey playing the game. We have celebrated wins and pondered losses. There is no off season in football when you have the drive and passion to play. I carefully coach my son, somedays I am mom, other days I am a coach. There is a fine line between the two, but my intention is always the same; support, inspiration and knowledge.
This coming year my son will play junior varsity in high school, while he has moved on in his own journey of football, I continue to coach youth football. I love coaching year after year. It gives me an opportunity to make a positive change in my player’s lives. I get to know each of my guys and their families. I genuinely care about what they want and how to help them achieve that goal. There are many reasons why my guys choose to play football, regardless of the reason; it is my job as their mentor to help them accomplish their goals as individuals on and off the field.
We begin every year as strangers and end the season as a family. I know what it is like to start something new and not know what to expect. Understanding football is like learning a different culture with its own language. Over my 10 years I have been asked many times to please explain football, equipment, positions, and many other facets of the game. I figured since so many women ask me in person I can only imagine how many other would have a need and a desire to also learn what I can share.
My blog will give you the opportunity to learn, understand, share and be a part of the game. I will keep it simple, fun and interactive. I look forward to sharing my insight regarding numerous things as a football coach, and more importantly as a mom.
Let me help you kick off a fun season!!
